Behind the work

Three projects, properly unpacked.

A closer look at the brief, the practical decisions and what was actually delivered.

Monogram digitisation & vector artwork

From hand-drawn idea to an editable brand mark.

Independent Bad Bitches was a clothing business run by a friend and former colleague. He had sketched a logo by hand and wanted it rebuilt as clean digital artwork that could be used across the brand.

The approach

The job was not to reinvent the client’s drawing. It was to preserve the original idea and rebuild it accurately as a clean, scalable, single-colour vector. Once the core artwork was established, I also explored colour treatments and font options to show how it could flex across different settings.

The late change

The business began as Independent Bad Bitches. Late in the process, the client became concerned that the swear word might cause problems on social media, so the name changed to the stylised Independent Bad Bxtch. Because the artwork was cleanly built and fully editable, I could make the change quickly across the supplied variations without rebuilding the project.

The delivery

The completed package included the requested single-colour vector, recoloured versions, font treatments and social-ready artwork. The vector could be scaled from a small profile image to clothing or signage without losing quality.

The result

The project progressed smoothly, including the last-minute name adjustment. The completed Independent Bad Bxtch logo remains in daily use across the client’s website and business.

Brand identity & practical logo system

A trade logo built to work online, in print and in thread.

Z.B. Plumbing & Heating came through a recommendation. The brief was open: create a professional vector logo around the owner’s initials that could work online, on printed clothing and through embroidery.

The idea

I wanted the initials to communicate the trade rather than sit beside a generic plumbing symbol. The Z became pipework for the plumbing side, while the B was shaped into a flame for heating. Together they created a compact mark that connected his name directly to the work.

Designed for real use

The gradient version worked well digitally but would be difficult to reproduce consistently through embroidery. I therefore produced a block-colour alternative that retained the same idea while working more reliably on clothing and other physical applications.

The delivery

The completed package included SVG and PNG artwork, black and reversed versions, blue-and-orange treatments, gradient and block-colour options, plus formats prepared for different social profile shapes.

The result

The project progressed without complications or rejected concepts. The logo remains in active use around two to three years later—and the client still regularly asks me to resend the original ZIP when he misplaces it.

03 L3D Printing Ice Hockey Wedding Topper View project story

Personalised artwork, 3D preparation & PLA printing

A one-off wedding detail built around a shared love of ice hockey.

I knew the couple through a Sheffield Steelers supporters’ WhatsApp group. When I saw that they wanted a personalised wedding cake topper, I offered to turn their ice-hockey idea into a finished physical piece. I was still early in my 3D-printing journey, so I made it for them free of charge.

The brief

The couple wanted a bride-and-groom silhouette with both figures wearing ice skates, the words “Mr & Mrs” beneath them and hockey sticks framing the lettering. Two integrated stakes would let the complete design sit in the cake as one removable piece.

From references to one design

The silhouette and hockey-stick elements were sourced references rather than illustrations drawn from scratch. My work was in selecting, adapting and positioning those elements, combining them into one composition, vectorising the artwork, making the fine sections connect reliably, then extruding the finished design into printable 3D geometry.

The print

The final model measured approximately 163 × 206 × 2.5 mm and was printed as a single piece in black PLA. It fitted within my 256 × 256 mm print bed and completed successfully on the first attempt, with no prototype, adjustment or reprint required.

The result

The couple were genuinely delighted when I delivered it, and it became part of their finished wedding cake. They offered to recommend my work to friends and support the business with a shout-out—an especially rewarding result from an early project I had simply offered to try.

Food-use note: Standard FDM layer lines can retain residue and are difficult to sanitise fully. For cake use, printed toppers should be kept from direct food contact with a suitable barrier or food-safe insertion sleeves.

I’m Sam Laidler — known as Leddy — and this is the home for my client-facing design work, 3D print projects and practical problem-solving.

I’m into practical problem-solving, graphic design, packaging artwork, 3D modelling, 3D printing, AI-assisted workflows and tech-led creative work. The useful mix is simple: I can help shape the idea, make it look right, then help make the physical thing exist too.

This site is intentionally lean: enough to show what I do, enough to start conversations, and focused on getting useful work out into the world.
